The robots are getting into the Lunar New Year spirit too!
As China gears up for its most important festival, the Lunar New Year, it's not just people who are preparing for the festivities. Even the nation's burgeoning robot population is joining in on the celebrations!
Imagine this: it's dress rehearsal day at a bustling mall in western Beijing. Four adorable humanoid robots, each standing about 95 centimeters (roughly 3 feet) tall, are getting ready for their big moment. Curious onlookers have gathered, eager to catch a glimpse of these mechanical performers.
Each robot is adorned in a vibrant lion costume, and within minutes, they launch into a synchronized routine. Picture them bending their knees, moving up, left, and right, shaking their masks with flair – and then repeating it all again! It’s a delightful display of programmed agility.
This isn't just a one-off event. Ahead of the Lunar New Year, which is just around the corner, various venues across Beijing are hosting special "fairs" and activities. And for the second year running, a significant portion of these fairs are dedicated to technology, with robots taking center stage.
What can you expect to see? These aren't just passive displays. The robots will be dancing, stacking blocks to build miniature towers, skillfully skewering hawthorn berries onto sticks (a popular sweet treat!), and even playing soccer.
"This year, the number of our robots has increased a lot," shared Qiu Feng, a member of the organizing committee. He added that the performances will include dance, martial arts, Peking Opera, poetry, and soccer.
"Some events were also available last year, but the fineness of the actions and the high-tech vibe are stronger this time," Qiu elaborated. This suggests a noticeable leap in the sophistication and polish of the robotic performances.
But here's where it gets really interesting: China has been making significant strides in developing more advanced robots. The goal is to create machines that can perform a wider range of activities with less human intervention, powered by cutting-edge artificial intelligence.
While these robots can now accomplish tasks that seemed like science fiction just a few years ago, it's important to note that humans are still very much involved. For instance, they might need a helping hand to get dressed or to be moved if they happen to stop mid-game on the mini-soccer field.
"Technology is developing faster and becoming more advanced every day," Qiu wisely observed. "As long as we keep up with this trend, our... fair will continue to evolve and rise with the times."
The robots you'll see at the mall are the brainchild of innovative Chinese startups, such as Booster Robotics. This company alone plans to showcase around 20 humanoid robots that will be performing dances and engaging in soccer matches.
Ren Zixin, marketing director at Booster Robotics, explained the advanced nature of their AI environment: "It is an AI environment, which means, once the whistle sounds, the remote control will all be put aside and all its decision-making and motion control are made by the robots themselves."
And this is the part most people miss: While the robots are programmed to be autonomous once a task begins, the underlying AI and the initial setup still rely heavily on human ingenuity and oversight. It's a fascinating blend of automation and human direction.
